What changed in search: being quoted, not just ranked

Buyers increasingly read an AI answer instead of a results page. Whether your page is one of its sources is decided by how it is written.

Notes

A growing share of buying research now happens inside an AI answer rather than on a results page. Someone asks an assistant which platform suits a Pakistani online store, and it writes a paragraph and names two or three sources. Whether your page is among them is decided differently from whether it ranks tenth, and the difference is in how the page is written.

The mechanism, stated plainly

An answer engine reads pages and lifts passages out of them. A passage survives that treatment only if it is a complete, factual statement that still makes sense with the paragraph above it removed. Everything else follows from that one constraint.

What it changes on the page

A page written to rank opens by explaining why its topic matters. A page written to be quoted opens with the answer to its own title, in the first sixty words.

A page written to rank uses headings as labels: "Our approach", "Key considerations". A page written to be quoted uses headings as the questions people actually type, and answers each one directly underneath.

A page written to rank makes claims out of adjectives: fast, reliable, affordable. A page written to be quoted makes claims that can be checked: what is included, what it costs, what it excludes.

Structure that a machine can read

Questions marked up as questions, rather than written as prose that happens to end in a question mark, are how an engine tells a genuine question-and-answer pair from a paragraph. Comparison content is disproportionately cited, because a comparison is exactly the shape of answer these questions call for.

What has not changed

None of this replaces search engine optimisation. An engine cannot quote a page it never crawled, so the technical work comes first and this sits on top of it. Nor does it replace being worth quoting: a page with nothing specific in it is not selected by any mechanism, old or new.

The uncomfortable part

Being quoted often means the reader never visits your site. That is a real cost and it is worth naming. It is still better than the alternative, which is a competitor being quoted instead, and the brand recognition from being named as a source is what the visit used to be for.
